Spring has sprung—well at least it’s supposed to have, even though there’s plenty of white stuff still flying around in some parts of western Canada. Regardless, it looks as if things are getting busy already, as drivers ready their summer travel plans. As for what lies ahead business-wise, who knows? The times remain uncertain. But we continue to roll with the punches, be they tariff driven or otherwise.
Digging around for retail news, despite a string of big name, mainly luxury brand losses, we’re seeing more than a glimmer of a bricks and mortar resurgence. However, every day living costs continue to have an impact on the average consumer. Typically, in times like these, that translates into people holding on to their vehicles longer and choosing to maintain rather than trade in or purchase a new vehicle.
Signs are that the current economic cycle is no different, pointing to a strengthening after-market that bodes well for independent tire dealers. The key questions are: how to remain in touch with your clientele; how to remind them they still need you; and how to reinforce the value and high calibre of service you deliver.
Speaking of the tail end of winter, CAA Quebec reports that drivers are holding onto their winter tires longer. Just how many seasons should you rely on a set of winter tires depends on where you are and common conditions. CAAQ found that “too many motorists are trusting tires that are in fair or downright unsafe shape.” The agency “recommends starting the winter season with at least 6/32th of an inch.” Inspectors also came across many older tires made over five years ago. “Ageing tends to harden the tread and reduce flexibility.” Read the full report (which also points the finger at “marginal or lesser-known brands”) in The Tracker.
